How to Wash the Cat...
1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.
2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.
3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. You may need to stand on the lid.
4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.
5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power-wash and rinse".
6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.
7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.
8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.
9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

HAHA I have to wrap my cat (just his body that is) in a towel if he needs a bath, and dip the whole towel and cat into the water. This method is almost as good as wearing full medieval-chain-mail all over my body.

my cat has a bad flea allergy and does infact need an occasional bath... yes he hates the bath(and me) for a while after... but what's worse? weeks of scratching and fur loss? or 5 minutes of bathing twice a year? ive showed him the pictures just to show him he's not the only one who has to go thru it. this has seemed to appease him ;-)
@Build Muscle: If you're short on time you can use the microwave instead. It's much quicker. :P
hey martha stewart baths her cat... I watched a whole show on it one day...now her chinchilla she doesn't wash but her cat she does. matter of fact I wash our cat the way martha showed us and it worked.Now I don't do it alot but sometime she gets into somthing and needs a bath.(outside cat) The pictures were awesome Thanks!!

Bathing a cat is truthfully bad for it. It removes essential protective oils from their skin that leaves them vulnerable to diseases. Best to let them do what they do best: a good lick-clean.

To the person who said it is unhealthy to bathe cats: actually this is a fallacy. I am a professional cat groomer in South Carolina. We see so many cats in our shop who have been neglected because their people mistakenly believed they could just "take care of themselves". Imagine if you just washed yourself in your own spit for your entire life! Uck! Cats who go without being bathed at least occasionally can end up matted and subject to a host of uncomfortable skin conditions. Even if you don't bring your cat to a groomer please do it the service a of bathing it at least 4 times a year in a degreasing shampoo. If it has long hair it should be bathed more frequently (more like at least every 8 weeks) and make sure to brush it regularly to prevent painful matting conditions. Your kitty might not act grateful but trust me, s/he will thank you in his/her own way (probably by leaving a little "gift" in your shoe or bed but hey, it's a cat!)
The toilet idea only works up to a certain size cat and after that it's either the washer and drier, or try the dishwasher. Kitty might come out looking like a big poofball but he will be clean! LMAO

Agreed. Cats need their bath. i bath mine at least once a month. this way i know if they have flea/ skin infections. i clean their ears with solutions too. if u can't look after ur cat, send it to the pro for grooming... easy

If you don't wash your cat it will lead to matted, greasy fur and dandruff at the least. Anyone who says cats can look after themselves is dumb as smeg, and shouldn't be allowed pets.

My cats have been bathed since we adopted them, so they enjoy their wash time, but my aunt's cat goes insane when he sees the tub.
there are a lot of silly people leaving comments on here. i found these pics funny, but wouldn't wash my cat unless he really needed it (which, thankfully, he hasn't so far...good for me cause he likes to use his claws). people who say you should NEVER wash your cat: come on, don't be daft, there will be certain situations where the cat cleaning itself could do more harm by it ingesting poisonous material. im pretty sure that you DON'T have cats and that you have NEVER attempted to bathe them. unless a cat is COVERED in dirt, they don't need a human to clean them. they can fend for themselves (which is part of the reason for their sandpaper-like tongues).
The most important thing in washing a cat is to make sure it never gets cold. (Mostly you don't have to wash them, but sometimes it's necessary) It must be dried thoroughly. I use a far infra red lamp to keep the kittens warm. I get them warm and relaxed under the light, petting them, then have the water at the same temperature. I dip them in and bring them back to my lap under the light to clean them. I put them back for a rinse, and bring them back under the lamp to dry them. They hardly notice the water because they love the warmth.
Cats, and particularly kittens can get upper resperatory problems easily if they get wet and aren't dried and warmed immediately. This is not pretty in cats, and can be fatal.
Don't wash your cat to watch it suffer or see it as an entertainment. That's cruel.

Cats and I have shared our lives together for over 53 years. I know my feline friend-pets. Generally, they hate getting wet. A few, like tigers, enjoy a swim occasionally. Bathing your feline friend should not be the same as bathing your dog. Cats need to be conditioned from kittenhood that humans who bathe them with water will quickly dry them and pamper them alot.

You should never bathe a cat the sandpaper toungues are enough for the cat to clean them selves... and occatioanally your hand or hair. They simpally hate getting wet, its not nice of you to torment a cat by putting him in water unless they went in the water them selves.

I had to laugh at this one. Where did you get your qualifications for this? Who was the first professional cat groomer? I imagine this job title came from city people. If you grew up on a farm you would not imagine washing a cat.
Considering that a cat constantly licks itself, I would assume that constantly washing your cat could be bad for it. Especially if you do not get all the soap off. So if your cat looks clean. don't wash.
In short unless you have a good reason to wash, don't. They probably do a better job and their tongues are designed for it. You might just mess up their biological balance if you wash them.
Wow so many conflicting opinions. I only really agreed with the guy at 4:37 yesterday. I don't wash my cat often, I only wash him when he gets oil on his back from going underneath cars. That has happened like twice. Chill, people. Cats can take care of themselves for he most part, but sometimes they need help. It's not cruel, you are not psychotic or an idiot if you give your cat a bath. You're a "bloody idiot" if you think you're right 100% of the time. It's funny how opinionated ignorant people are.

I think most people who own a cat know that they don't NEED washing but sometime's it's necessary. The rant from anonymous is quite out of order I think, just a blinkered view of why these things happen.

We wash our cats every few months. They hate it but are used to it because we began when they were small. We make sure to not let them get cold.
For those who claim cats should not be bathed because they survive in the wild without being washed: what about horses, dogs, etc? They also survive in the wild without being groomed.
What's good for the goose/dog/horse/human is good for the gander/cat...when it comes to cleanliness, at least.

I'd never heard of washing a cat for anything other than a serious medical condition (including being covered in oil etc.) before my husband (who's American, I'm English) and I got a cat. I told him that was up to him alone because I wasn't going to partake in anything so ridiculous, our cat has stayed bath free and shiny and clean since we got her.
We've had cats since I was very little and I have never heard of any of them being bathed or witnessed someone doing it and I have never seen a cat, ours or a neighbours, with 'matted, greasy fur and dandruff at the least.'~ Jim Speed, earlier poster. some cats enjoy washing in warm water and if they have a skin condition they need it also if they have gotten thick mud or a more dangerous material(i.e cleaning liquid) on them it is nessasary to wash them how would you like to lick off mud and also cats in the wild would find somthing to scrape the mud off and then lick themselves clean so watch your lamp and table legs and the protective oils on their skin turn dangerous after awile because they can help matt fur i wash my cats at least once a year brush them every day and dry them with a towel once a week

um, cats naturally live free in the wild, where there are no humans to bathe them. to the "pro pet groomer", i think you're full of it. of course you think cats need baths because those ignorant customers pay your salary. cats saliva have special enzymes that keep them clean, and it also also includes a natural deodorant, so they usually smell good too!
washing a cat is fine, flea baths are fine, just make sure you dry them off and that they have somewhere to hide for a bit afterwards that's warm. you people are getting way too emotional about cat bathing. you only have to do it once in a while and it keeps fleas off and their coats nice and shiny, it definitely helps. get lives naysayers, borrow one of your cats lives if you have to, but please get one. No one should get that upset about some wet pussy pics.

I lived on a farm all my life and have never had to bath any of those cats and we had lots of them. However, I did bath a cat once when we lived elsewhere only cause it had fleas. I used a special shampoo for this. The fleas didn't like the shampoo and water and they all congregated on the poor cats head. I just cleaned them all off.
I've got five indoor/outdoor cats, and I've occasionally washed all of them. They shun me for a few days, dry off in the sun, and then go roll in the dirt
living where I do, there is a lot of tall grass, and in the summer, they all end up with fleas and ticks.

And just to reiterate: no, it is not cruel to wash your cat (unless you're doing it to abuse him/her)!
i'm a veterinarian. while bathing a cat isn't cruel, it's usually not necessary unless they got into something toxic or if they're really dirty and you dont want them messing up your house or something. long-haired cats do sometimes need grooming to remove mats (or you can just as easily cut them out; it wont be pretty but it might be less stressful, just be careful!) it won't hurt the cat; as long as you're using a shampoo specifically designed for pets, it won't strip them of their coats natural oils (never use human shampoo, because that will strip their coats). bathing for fleas doesn't really do much because the fleas will jump back on as soon as the cat is out the bath (and flea baths can contain harmful chemicals). if your cat has bad fur and dandruff, it probably has worms or isn't getting good nutrition.
and in response to a comment above about dogs living in the wild, they don't. wolves live in the wild. domesticated dogs, while some would do better than others, are very much dependent on humans for survival. a miniature poodle would not last one day in the wild. even bigger and tougher dog would probably have trouble. cats, on the other hand, can survive very well without humans, and aren't so much domesticated as much as they choose to live with us because we give them food and shelter.

The trick to bathing a cat with fleas is to start with a ring of the special soap around the neck and work you way to the end of the tail.
Loved the pics and most of the comments. I have had cats all my life and they have all been bathed at least a couple of times in their lives and hated it...but then I hate the dentist and still have to go if I want to live pain free.

As a vet tech in the field, I have to echo the above Dr John's comments.. a healthy cat often can go years without needing a bath, but there are also enough good reasons to give a cat a bath. One of the predominant reason that long haired cats see groomers (and they do, frequently) is because owners of said poor beasties don't take the time to brush out their fur so they develop mats in their coat which can become quite painful if not removed. Age, illness, allergies, or chemical exposure can also necessitate baths, though they should always be done with an animal-specific shampoo. The shampoos that people use are incredibly harsh on the natural oils of their coat and skin, and can damage both.
That said.. I think I've seen most of those kitties at some point in time over the years.. I've bathed far too many cats! ; )

Wow, I am sorry that I didn't check back in here sooner to see all these wacky and shortsighted responses! I am the previous poster, the professional cat groomer from South Carolina. My qualifications are that I spent a year in in grooming school at Greenville Technical College. I also hold a Veterinary assisting certificate from the same school. Now you can scoff that it is "just a technical college" as I'm sure someone will, but many states don't require any training at all to call yourself a pet groomer of any sort. I also did my work study under and continue to work at the business of the head of the National Cat Groomers Institute of America. So to answer that comment, I am qualified to call myself that. Also we are hardly located "in the city" We are in Simpsonville, SC, a suburb of Greenville, which is a city by SC standards but makes my New Jersey mother nearly die from culture shock when she comes down. Drive 20 minutes in any direction and you are in the sticks. These are not city ideas. I think people are just beginning to realize that cats need a higher grade of care than we once thought they did. The case is especially true with long haired cats. We have seen cats come into the shop with tragically matted coats called a pelt condition where the coat has essentially become one piece covering the whole body which either needed to be painfully dematted or shaved off. Obviously those cats were not doing a fine job of caring for their own coats. Cats are just like people in that their "hair" is all different. Some cats are more greasy than others, some cats have dry skin. Further some are more prone dirty ears and other have anal gland issues which groomers also deal with. And the thing is, to the people who scoffed at my job and called it unnecessary, there are times I wish it was. There are times I wish people with a grease prone persian with runny eyes and waxy ears didn't just think that animal was capable of caring for itself and leave it to get a painful matting condition that I have to take care of. I would rather that people just knew that proper way to take care of their own pets instead of hanging on to these old wives tales about how self sufficient they are. Also to the poster who mentioned that they need to be thoroughly dried, thank you...that had so slipped my mind!
And you know, I know this just started out as a funny collection of pictures, and they are very funny btw, but I am glad we were able to have this lively discussion a hopefully clear up some of the misconceptions about this topic.

I bathe my cat when she goes to the bathroom and makes a mess of herself (she's long haired) And she's allergic to frontline so I wash her with dawn every few months (since she's an indoor cat)... and while she isn't happy, she's used to it because I've done it since she was a kitten. She still has her claws and I don't get scratched when she gets a bath. I would rather give her a bath than have a cat with poop on her climb into bed with me. She's perfectly healthy and has a nice coat and sits in my lap while i dry her off a few feet away from a space heater. You don't HAVE to bathe your cat, but long haired cats need it sometimes.

i washed my cat in the bath tub. I had to wrestle him down. In the end he got clean and i got wet and bloody(i really need to file down my cats claws)
OMG! I'm disgusted at what I see and read here! Wash cats?! File down their nails?! What the hell are you people on?! It is CRUEL beyond belief. You do not need to wash a cat, they are one of the cleanest animals! They need their claws to scratch themselves, climb trees and be able to get themselves out of possible trouble. This is so wrong.

Wow. For real. The pictures are funny, I have to admit. Indoor cats, by the way, could really use some nail-filing or clipping, but it should be done with special clippers designed specifically for cats. Filing and clipping is less painful and expensive than declawing them, and inside cats can destroy expensive furniture with those tree-climbing claws. As far as not bathing cats, I rarely bathe mine (I have three), but all of them love to play in the bathtub and try to catch the water with their paws and mouths when I take a shower. I guess my cats know what's good for them, and they often jump in to play and bathe when we turn the shower on.
I'd like to make a request that all of you think before you type, realize that these primarily long-haired cats probably are taking baths to prevent matting, and some are merely accidents. Don't judge the people who bathe their cats. Choose your belief and abide by it. We all know how we personally feel. No one is forcing you to bathe your cat, and people are allowed to do whatever they feel is necessary for the safety and health of their animals. Hopefully they are intelligent enough to ask the vet if their bathing procedures are hurting the animal. Please remember that this is a public forum and it IS meant to be a joke--a series of funny images to make the audience laugh. If you have a problem with it, respect the poster's First Amendment rights and leave the site. You aren't forced to view it.

The comments on here are quite insane. If you have an indoor/outdoor cat, chances are that it will contract fleas at some point in it's life. While giving them a flea collar is helpful, the best course of action is often to give it a medicated flea bath (just like washing lice from a kids hair). Other cats may get poor skin conditions, psoriasis, or fur mats, and a bath could help (along with addressing concerns that your cat may not be getting the right nutrients). So please don't be stupid and say "NEVER" or "ALWAYS" it doesn't make sense and it makes you sound like an uninformed idiot.

OK, first of all sometimes cats do "need" a bath. Mine got a cold and quit cleaning himself which led to a not so pleasant odor emanating from him. Since he liked to sleep at the foot of our bed, this was unacceptable. Bath time it is. All went well for a while. Um, as well as it can go with a thrashing animal armed with multiple razors and tiny sharp spikes in its mouth. We got to the final cup of water to rinse off the last of the soap when I was required to change hands and loosen my grip for a millisecond. unfortunately this was more than enough time for my cat to spin, do a flip and lunge mouth first toward my bicep. I still have a 4 puncture wound scar on my arm.
If you decide to give your cat a bath, then please for the love of god recruit some help first.
I guess that if you think your cat may need a bath, take it to a vet to get a professional opinion.

easy to explain. evolution by natural selection can be easily manipulated by humans. the ones that survived were good at cleaning themselves, and didn't have problems that made it difficult such as gland problems etc. when humans started breeding cats and keeping them as pets, it's easy to imagine that through caring for the less able ones, they were better able to survive and pass on genes, resulting in SOME breeds of cats that are less able to look after themselves in some conditions, as well as the ones who generally have no problems.
there is nothing wrong with caring for an animal if you do it properly in a way that does not harm it. don't go using pine-o-cleen or white king on your cat, for example. only use the pet shampoos and make the cat as comfortable as you can. like someone said, do you always enjoy going to the dentist or doctor? no, but they gave you a lollipop after, didn't they?
just to clarify i'm not the professional groomer, nor am i a biologist or veterinarian. use common sense. if you want to bathe your cat, find out how to do it right. if you don't want to, and your cat is clean and healthy, then fine. it's probably well equipped. but if you notice that the cat isn't keeping itself clean and still don't want to wash it, take it to the vet and let them educate you on the matter and help you help your little friend.

There is nothing wrong with giving a cat a bath. Just don't do it too often, or it will dry out their skin. I wash my cats once every couple of months in the summer, just in case it has fleas. Indoor kitties can get fleas too! Would you rather bath the cat so it doesn't scratch its skin raw from fleas? Or just let it lick itself, which doesn't help the flea situation?
It you have big kitties: you need two people for the job!!! :) My cat is 17 pounds and declawed and I still needed my roommate to help me!

i hate bathing my cat i used to have 3 cats i tried the toilet washing lost all of them on the 2 flush.... now i understand it was a joke i think i will try washer dryer bashing next....

this is so funny but seriously now NEVER WASH YOUR CAT, unless it is coverd in motor oil or the likes, especially when they are small, it can often result in pneumonia which in say, 50% of cases will result in death! Your pet trusts you, dont do this to it lol, :D
Please don't listen to anyone who says a cat will become greasy and full of dandruff if they are not washed. Cats are not meant to be washed, and don't like water. I have had many cats (and still have), all of whom lived long lives (20 years) and I never washed any of them, and they were all beautiful and silky. Brush? yes, Wash? no! The only time you might be forced to use water is if the cat got into something that could really only be removed with bathing. Then please be careful and respectful. I don't find any of these pictures or jokes funny, the cats look terrified and miserable.
For all of the people who say that cats don't need to be washed, try having a fat cat who cant clean herself. Our one cat, she had the worst dandruff, and we would have to clean her butt because she couldn't reach it. And it really does all depend on the cat and the circumstances, get a life some of you. There are certain breeds that need regular washing.

I am certain that is unnecessary torture to the animals. I have had my cats for 17 years and have been told by many that they are so clean. I don't expose them to torturous baths. They have been quite capable of bathing themselves. Now it was funny one day when I was in the bath and felt the weight of a cat on my face, as I was washing my own hair in the bathtub. She isn't as graceful as most cats and fell of the lip of my clawfoot tub. I think she just meant to visit.
those pictures are just cruel. cats hate water; it's a known fact. they do not need baths. these pictures are horrible and not funny at all. who laughs at this kind of torture?!? look at the look in their eyes. miserable.
try using lukewarm water to bathe the cat..it would do the trick!!as long as u dont use hot water!!if u have a sunny porch, with tiles and everything, do it there..as cats will love to sunbathe themselves after the horrible experience..its actually good to dry them without having to blow dry them
